Solar and BESS with Lithium Storage Benefits Applications ROI and Cost Value Added

Solar power solves one big problem well: it produces low-cost electricity when the sun is available. A battery energy storage system solves the next problem: it stores that power and makes it useful when the sun is not available, when the grid fails, or when power tariffs are high.

That is why solar plus BESS is becoming a practical choice for homes, housing societies, shops, factories, warehouses, petrol pumps, hospitals, farms, telecom sites, schools, and commercial buildings across India. It is no longer only about installing panels on a roof. The real value comes from controlling when energy is produced, stored, and used.

A BESS, or Battery Energy Storage System, includes batteries, an inverter or power conversion system, battery management software, protection systems, and controls. When paired with solar PV, it can reduce diesel generator use, provide backup power, lower demand charges, and improve power reliability.

How solar and BESS work together

A normal grid-connected solar system generates power during the day. The building uses this power first. Any excess may go to the grid if net metering or net billing is available. At night, or during cloudy periods, the building imports power from the grid.

When lithium storage is added, the system gets more flexible.

A typical solar plus BESS cycle looks like this:

  1. Solar panels generate DC power during the day.

  2. An inverter converts it to usable AC power.

  3. The building consumes solar power first.

  4. Extra solar power charges the battery.

  5. During evening hours, outages, or high-tariff periods, the battery supplies power.

  6. The controller decides when to charge, discharge, or hold energy based on settings.

This can be designed in different ways.

Grid-tied hybrid system

The site remains connected to the utility grid. Solar and battery reduce grid consumption and provide backup for selected loads.

Off-grid system

The site runs without grid supply. Solar, batteries, and often a DG set or other backup source work together.

Backup-focused system

The battery acts like a large UPS. Solar charges it when available, and the battery supports critical loads during power cuts.

Peak shaving system

The battery discharges when load demand crosses a set limit. This helps reduce maximum demand charges for commercial and industrial consumers.

Why lithium storage is preferred

Older battery backup systems often used lead-acid batteries. They still exist because of their lower upfront cost, but lithium batteries have changed the economics for many users.

Lithium-ion batteries, especially lithium iron phosphate or LFP chemistry, are widely used in solar storage because they handle daily charging and discharging better than many older options. They are compact, charge faster, and need less routine maintenance.

The biggest benefit is not only battery life. It is usable energy.

For example, a 10 kWh battery may not allow the full 10 kWh to be used safely every day. Lithium systems usually allow a higher usable portion than lead-acid systems. This means a smaller lithium battery can often support the same practical load for longer.

Benefits of adding BESS to solar

Solar alone reduces the daytime electricity bill. Solar plus storage adds reliability, control, and better use of generated power.

It improves energy independence

A solar system without storage stops supplying power during most grid failures, unless it is designed for backup. This surprises many first-time solar users.

With a hybrid inverter and BESS, selected loads can keep running when the grid fails. These loads may include:

  • Lights and fans

  • Wi-Fi and computers

  • Refrigeration

  • Security systems

  • Medical or lab equipment

  • Billing counters

  • CCTV and access control

  • Pumps with controlled starting load

For homes and small businesses, this can replace or reduce a conventional inverter battery. For commercial sites, it can reduce dependence on diesel generators.

It increases solar self-consumption

Many sites generate more solar power than they can use at noon. If grid export rules are not favourable, that surplus energy may have limited value.

A battery can store this extra generation and use it later. This is useful when:

  • The building has high evening load

  • Export compensation is low

  • Net metering capacity is limited

  • The site wants to avoid reverse power flow

  • DG sets run during outages while solar power is available

Better self-consumption often improves the financial case for solar.

It reduces diesel generator use

Diesel generators are useful, but they are costly to run and maintain. Fuel cost, noise, emissions, oil changes, breakdowns, and load management all add up.

Solar plus BESS can reduce DG runtime in two ways.

The battery can handle short outages without starting the generator. During longer outages, solar can charge the battery and support loads, while the generator runs only when needed.

This is especially valuable in areas with frequent but short power cuts.

It supports peak shaving

Many commercial and industrial users pay demand charges based on their highest load during the billing cycle. A short spike can increase the bill.

A BESS can discharge during high-load periods and reduce the grid demand seen by the meter. This is known as peak shaving.

It works well where load spikes are predictable, such as:

  • Cold storage compressor start cycles

  • Manufacturing shifts

  • Large HVAC start-up periods

  • EV charging peaks

  • Pumping loads

  • Machinery start-up loads

Peak shaving needs careful system design. The battery must have enough power rating, not just energy capacity.

Where solar plus BESS can be used

The right application depends on load pattern, power quality, electricity tariff, outage frequency, and available solar space.

Long backup duration

For India, the strongest use cases are often commercial sites with daytime solar potential and expensive backup power. Examples include factories in industrial estates, warehouses on highway corridors, hotels, hospitals, schools, petrol pumps, and rural facilities with weak grid supply.

BESS as a UPS and power backup system

One common question is whether a BESS can work like a UPS. The answer is yes, if the system is designed for that role.

A UPS, or uninterruptible power supply, protects loads from power interruptions. Traditional UPS systems are common in data centres, hospitals, labs, ATMs, telecom, and IT rooms. A lithium BESS can perform similar backup functions at a larger scale, but the changeover time, inverter design, and load sensitivity matter.

There are three broad backup expectations.

Basic backup

Power may shift after a short delay. This is fine for lights, fans, pumps, and many general loads.

UPS-grade backup

Power transfer happens very quickly. This is needed for servers, medical devices, control systems, and sensitive electronics.
